They're Repeating across America What They Did with Christianity

The Trump phenomenon's most revealing and defining instances – not its most important, nor most harsh, nor most dangerous, nor stupidest, but possibly its most revealing – emerged earlier this harvest season. In the course of a few weeks, the nation's leader started showing all observers his plans for an ornate dance hall two times larger of the White House and then began independently demolishing the East Wing to construct it.

He has performed deeds countless times more severe – the current estimate of deaths resulting from his reductions to international aid stands at 600,000 and rising, and this week an analysis forecast his fossil fuel policies would cause deaths 1.3 million more. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have risked – truly, no previous leader would have conceived – independently wrecking large sections of the executive mansion to build a Versailles-style party room, with the enthusiastic participation of multiple America's wealthiest, the majority of whom have business with the government.

We transitioned from 'the humble will receive the world' to 'the gentle will succumb from cholera'

As disorienting as it is to observe the president seek to颠覆 the established notion about democracy and substitute it with its polar opposite, there remains a substantial portion of Americans who might not perceive it entirely new. That is those of us – within elder demographics close to half – who were brought up within mainstream Protestant traditions.

We have watched throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations transformed the Christ we were raised with into the complete reverse of who we understood him to be. Essentially, they turned a figure of affection into an icon of hostility who blesses exactly the harshness that he condemned in biblical teachings; this has happened more slowly, through multiple decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless disturbing via comparable methods, a disorienting gut punch for numerous individuals.

A Damaging Christianity Takes Hold

Hence I shall explain the Jesus from my childhood, because theoretically Christ is the focus of any Christian faith, and because the rapidly expanding group within America could have minimal awareness regarding him since they are atheists or doubters or religiously unaffiliated. I take no issue with these various perspectives, nor with any other faith; but I do think that contain precious wisdom of significant worth in biblical accounts.

It is unquestionably not the account of a powerful ruler appearing; conversely, a baby is born to parents without shelter in a storage space, who must quickly flee to another nation to evade secret police. The child matures in simple surroundings, a laboring woodworker; his message concerns compassion for other people, especially for the disadvantaged – and not a sentimental love, but practical compassion, demonstrated through nourishing and sheltering. The Savior's reaction to violence is to present the opposite cheek – not as a demonstration of compliant endurance, but as a method to teach the attacker; his crime policy states that when someone steals your outer garment you must offer the person your additional clothing as well.

The obvious and clear truth that the Savior from scripture calls for a type of extreme compassion focused on the needy is what has always made Christianity something of a provocative belief system: attractive to the masses, but because of its inherent radicalness needing to be contained. In the fifties it was contained through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it practically baptized the status quo.

A Struggle for the Best Among Us

Hence I have become encouraged to see the steadfast resistance to Trump arise in this past year. It has provided substantial consolation to assist in constructing the campaign that has demonstrated publicly in rally after rally, and likely has encouraged voters to turn out in large quantities in interim political contests. We shall require to continue it, and with identical determination, featuring US banners at every demonstration and calls to the highest qualities within national heritage.

America is best defended, in other words, by reference to the best within national tradition, exactly as the Christian faith is most protected by relationship to that which renders it special and wonderful, which is the example of Christ. In neither case does it mean acting as if the worst about the nation and religious tradition did not happen; it signifies both modesty and faith, a mixture that committed US believers should be comfortable with.
