Exactly 30 years since the first Toy Story movie debuted, launching the animation giant as a leading animation studio and introducing viewers to beloved figures like Woody (Tom Hanks) and the space ranger (the voice talent), who are now household names.

In 2026, the fifth installment is set to arrive. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 landed this week, providing a brief look into the plot but leaving viewers curious how it will address the conclusion of Toy Story 4.

Bonnie's New Toy: A Frog-Shaped Tablet Frightens the Gang

The preview reveals Bonnie — who inherited Andy's toys when he grew up — getting a latest toy, one that alarms the familiar toy group. Bonnie acquires her initial digital gadget, and she is thrilled about it.

Theoretically, the frog-shaped tablet will come to life just like Bonnie's other toys. Still, the characters seem to view it as a danger intending to supplant them, which it probably is.

Woody's Return: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4

An element the teaser doesn't touch on is what the sheriff is returned with his companions in the child's bedroom. The finale of Toy Story 4 saw him embark on a new adventure with Bo Peep (Annie Potts), journeying with a carnival and helping prize toys locate loving owners.

Certainly, Pixar will address the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the film. Seeing him show up in Bonnie's room unexpectedly is somewhat puzzling, however. It also raises questions whether his partner will have come back with him. And where is the stuntman toy (Keanu Reeves)?

Connections from the Last Installment

Fortunately, some aspects are carrying over from the prior film. The final act the cowboy did before departing for his new life was pass his symbol of authority to the cowgirl (Joan Cusack), leaving her as the leader of the toy domain. In the teaser displays the badge pinned to her shirt.

Hopefully she is remains the driving force among the toys.
